ASSIGNMENT 3 - Form Manipulation

This is our second and last group project for this module. We were once again assigned someone to research on, this time an architect, and we had to manipulate cuboids, prisms and cylinders to create a model related to his design characteristics.

Our given architect was Shigeru Ban, a Japanese architect known for his humanitarian work as well as paper tubes in his structures. Firstly we had to do a detailed research about him and his work

This was our first entry into form manipulation, which was pretty challenging for most of us. I think at the start I did not consider the volume of the form and treated each form as hollow shells, which lead to very bland manipulations. Discovering a word/concept for our work also took a long time before we were able to find one which suit our architect.

While this was another project that frustrated me, and I was often unsure about what to do, however what I learned from this project was a very important part of being an architect.

We were then exposed to different ways to manipulate form, such as slice and remove, interlocking, collision of geometry etc. The book Form, Space and Order by Francis D.K. Ching was extremely useful for us. we had to make models in class every week.

We struggled with making the models, since this was the first time we were exposed to form manipulation. I was unable to think of the final model so I focused on making the 3 A1 presentation boards.

Because there was no verbal presentation for this project, we had to make sure that our boards clearly show the content in diagrams so that it is easy to read and understand.
